Loved this place. It was super out of the way from the Painted hills and the Sheep rock unit, but the park itself was very quiet and well kept. Grass and sprinklers everywhere, access to the John day river, and right next to a cute little day use park that had horseshoes and picnic tables. Great place for families and quiet couples
The highway does run right by one side of the campground, so you'll hear a little vehicle sound, but the nature around you kind of makes civilization fade away.
The little town of John Day is close by (five miles, maybe), so you can run in if you forgot something or just to check out the town.
Next to the John Day River. A little close to the Highway, so noise from traffic can be distracting.
Great place for family gatherings, plenty of picnic tables and shade. restrooms have running water, there is a water spigot and drinking fountain.
Nice established campground with grass and trees. Fire wood is a bargain. There are some short trails also to explore.
This is one of the most pleasant and comfortable campgrounds I've ever stayed at. We were in camp site 17, and it is one of the best, in my opinion. The next one over (15, I believe) is pretty perfect, too. Highly recommended!
A wonderful destination: Oregon State Park on 395 in Mt. Vernon just east of John Day. Was there for the solar eclipse, but mark this down for a wonderful destination park. Fully equipped with paved parking places and all the amenities for all kinds of camping. Tents, RVs., hookups, water, electricity, and dump station. In trees. Beautiful place. Ten stars.
A lovely, clean campground with lots of grass and shade, spacious campsites, a small river running alongside, great staff, and excellent bathroom and shower facilities!
I was there for the eclipse and the campground had nightly astronomy programs for adults and kids.
